Grande Prairie RCMP Offer Holiday Safety Tips

 

Grande Prairie, Alberta – RCMP are reminding the public to stay safe over the upcoming holiday season and offer the following tips:

 

While Shopping or running errands:

  • Vehicle theft is prevalent. Please do not leave unattended vehicles running under any circumstances. Even for a moment.
  • Do not leave any valuables in your vehicle
  • Keep your vehicle locked at all times
  • Refrain from storing packages in your vehicle and returning to the store, keep packages with you until you’re ready to return home and lock them in the trunk for transport
  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit area
  • Don’t carry large amounts of cash and be aware of your surroundings when getting cash from ATM machines

While travelling:

  • Refrain from posting the dates and locations of your travel via social media
  • Keep a record of the valuables that are stored in your home in the event you become a victim of a break and enter
  • Carefully discard cardboard packaging to conceal the nature of the contents
  • Note the license plates of suspicious vehicles and the descriptions of suspicious people
  • Check your mail frequently and advise Canada Post if you’ll be away for an extended period of time
  • Wear seatbelts and keep emergency cold weather supplies in your vehicle
  • If you return home to find a crime has occurred, do not enter your home. Call police from a cell phone or a neighbours phone

While Celebrating:

  • Never drink alcohol and drive
  • Always plan ahead and arrange a safe ride home
  • If hosting a party monitor the amount of alcohol consumed by your guests
  • Offer a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages
