Grande Prairie RCMP Remind the Public of Tax Refund Phishing Scam

Grande Prairie, AB:  With “tax season” upon us, the Grande Prairie RCMP would like to remind the citizens of Grande Prairie and area to take necessary precautions to prevent them from being scammed out of their hard earned money and to protect their identities.

The following is a link from the Canada Revenue Agency’s website. It is in regards to ongoing scams and preventative measures:

Occasionally, taxpayers may receive communication (via telephone, mail or email) that claims to be from the Canada Revenue Agency(CRA) but it is NOT.  In all these cases, the communication requests personal information such as social insurance, credit card, bank account or passport numbers from the taxpayer.  These fraudulent communications as also referred to as scams or phishing.

The communication will request the personal information and declare that it is needed so that the taxpayer can receive a refund or benefit payment. Another common scam refers the person to a website that resembles the CRA’s website and the taxpayer is asked to verify their identity by entering personal information.  Taxpayers should not respond to such requests.

The CRA provides the following guidelines to help the public determine if they are dealing with fraudulent communications.

The CRA does not do the following:

  • The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email
  • The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless a formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer
  • The CRA will not leave any personal information on a voicemail or answering machine.

Protect yourself, your identity, and your hard earned money. Once you have fallen for this type of scam, it is very difficult to investigate and prosecute those responsible as many times, those responsible live in other countries outside of the reach of Canadian laws.  The best way to stop this type of scam is to recognize it before you fall victim.
